Q&A: How should I answer an airport customs officer when asked for my nationality?
I’m flying this friday to the UK from the Philippines. It’s my first time to go international so I have no idea. I have dual citizenship and I’m carrying an EU German Passport. If the customs officer asks me for my nationality, do I answer “Deutsch” or what? And any other tips will be much appreciated, thanks.

The answer in the following: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

just tell him what country you were born. i.e the nationality you put on your passport form.

Make sure you are courteous, answer any questions in a firm language without being confrontational. Keep your eyes focased and not confrontational when looking at the officer. With dual citizenship I would use the Deutsch language. I am sure you will find the experience lifting. You don’t need to worry. When you arrive at Newcastle after a 7 ¾ hour flight from Dubai at 12:05pm local time you just need to go through the EU/EEA lane at immigration and present your valid German passport. It will be scanned against a list of lost/stolen passports reported and against a list of people searched for by an international, European, or national warrant of arrest. This only takes a second and your passport will be handed back to you without any further questions asked. European citizen are not subject to immigration procedures on entry of any EU country. You don’t have to fill forms (landing card) or will be asked questions..

Gute Reise!

Hello
The customs officer won’t ask ur nationality, he can see ur nationality on ur passport… but he may ask why u come to UK and maybe where u will stay.
He will maybe make sure this is not fake passport with his scanner…but no worries, everything’s gonna be ok. Just answer as clear as possible to the short questions he will ask u. U are European citizens and there is a special row for European citizens so take the right row. For Europeans, the check control.
Since Sept 11, when the airline issue ur ticket, all the data goes directly to Security…so Customs already know who needs to get a tough control. I.e, when Easyjet asks u to fill in the data before u check in, this is a way to send all data to customs of ur destination. We call it APIS (Advance Passenger Information System), in travel agent slang. Airlines requires the APIS of passenger.
And remember this, never joke with officer…just be polite.
Good trip to UK

If that’s the passport you’re carrying, that’s the nationality to proclaim. Your other citizenship is of little or no interest. And you can’t prove it anyway. Claiming any other nationality would at best just confuse things.

Answer by Techwing
With dual citizenship, you can give him either nationality, at your discretion. Both are legally equivalent. Show him the passport for the nationality you give him. The other nationality doesn’t matter.
