.odt format files will NOT be read by earlier versions of Microsoft Office, my friend. They can actually be opened by another Office Suite, LibreOffice, which appears to be a ‘sister’ suite to OpenOffice.

Answer by Chris
Open office is also able to read Word, and vice versa. In word it also is able to read ODT format.
