Question: Can I use a Microsoft Office Windows XP cd on a MacBook?
I have the cd to install Microsoft Office onto my Windows XP computer. Would it be compatible with my new MacBook? Or would I have to buy a new version specifically for macs?
The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

You have to get the Mac version. The Windows version will not work directly on the Mac. Your alternative is to use either Bootcamp to partition your drive and install a legal copy of Windows on the partition, then install the MS Office on the Windows partition, or use Parallels or VMWare Fusion (both are virtual machine programs you have to buy) to allow you to run Windows over the Mac OS, and then run Windows programs (be aware that if you do this, they will run slower).
So it’s probably easier and cheaper to buy the Mac version of MS Office.
Of course, if you want to go REALLY cheap, then download the free OpenOffice, which can open MS Office files and also save as MS Office files. And it’s more stable than MS Office for the Mac. You can find it at H77p://www.openoffice.org

Windows programs do not run on Macs, and Mac programs do not run on Windows. In addition, recent versions of MS Office use a key code that is tied to a single computer – you cannot run it on multiple computers (in some cases you can run it on up to 3 computers, if I remember correctly, for some of the basic versions). After you install Office, you have to “activate” it, and from then on the key code is tied to that computer and cannot be transferred to another computer.
OpenOffice.org is a free, open source office suite. It includes the main features of MS Office (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and database); it is free; and it runs on Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. Plus it uses open document formats, so you can use other programs to read and write the files with 100% compatibility; MS Office uses closed formats, so no programs other than MS Office can open all documents with 100% compatibility, locking you into using MS Office. OpenOffice does read and write most MS Office files with no problems, so you should have no problems using your existing documents. And, going forward, if you use OpenOffice on all platforms, you can use the same program everywhere (there are even portable versions that run from a USB drive in case you are at a computer that doesn’t have OpenOffice installed), and you will not be locked into using any particular program. And you can’t beat the price!
